Akashar Ratnamala · Garland of letters

The varṇamālā is arranged by the mouth, not by a song. Hear each sound, watch the vocal organs move, then trace the pen path on glass or on a printed sheet.

Types of vowels

Short vowels are ह्रस्व. Long vowels are दीर्घ. ए ऐ ओ औ are सन्ध्यक्षर — compound vowels. ए and ओ are guṇa; ऐ and औ are vṛddhi. अं and अः are अयोगवाह: they depend on a vowel already spoken.
